Hello all. Tekumel is one of the most interesting places I have ever "been"...
We have begun a campaign in Oklahoma City using the old Empire of the Petal throne rulebook and "Welcome to Jakalla". I am refereeing the game and we have five players, none of them had ever heard of Tekumel but all are thoroughly enjoying it and are quite intrigued by the setting. They love Jakalla!
I first encountered Tekumel in game shops (early 80's) as a kid when I saw the miniatures and then after joining the Navy I bought a slew of the material, I think I had the original game from a game shop in Hawaii. I got it back to the ship, realized I did not comprehend it, and instead of making the effort, shrugged, sold back all these gems, and played AD&D instead. Still, the little glimpse of this strange and alien world stuck with me, as did the name.
This year, for some reason I thought of it again and decided to have a look see on the web. This website really illuminated some of the material I had previously chalked up as incomprehensible. I began reading here and the man of Gold book, ordered the rule book and started playing. I plan to stay in Tekumel for a long long time!
I hope Tekumel enters mainstream public consciousness one day, be it by means of the game or a film. I truly believe it has that potential and since Professor Barker was true to his vision it may one day see great attraction. My hope is that he is permitted to see this but if not it is always an honor to leave the world an artistic legacy. Emily Dickinson is known as an American poetic great today but never saw even a single poem published in her lifetime. She stayed true to her vision and her art gave her joy in life, solace through what can sometimes be a dreary and formidable world. Professor Barker's interior life and those of his friends have been enriched by his world--this is something far greater than commerical success though I wish this for him as well.
Tekumel deserves recognition for its special merits and I think it will come one day.
Meanwhile, I will be introducing it to everyone I can!
