I have heard it repeated many times, that Tekumel: Empire of the Petal Throne will, in addition to it's Tri-stat Derived rules currently out, be published in a d20 format. Is this true? And if so, when will it be out? Is Guardians of Order publishing the d20 version?

...not that the Tri-stat Derived version is a piece of crap, mind.

According to the latest ESI from Guardians (which was posted today), they are still committed to publishing the d20 version of T:EPT. As of today the release has slipped back to Sept. 1st, 2005.

While I plan on running my first campaign with the Tri-Stat Derived rules, I have been asked by some gaming friends about running a d20 version campaign. This will all depend on how well I feel the d20 version models my view of Tekumel.

It bears saying that EPT originally used the D&D rules, and the game had a definate mechanical tie to the venerable system. I would enjoy a d20 version, just to see what Ian Sturrock will do with the game is enough to provoke interest. I know in some RPG circles many look down on the d20 system, and deride it. Step back and look at the big picture; system really does not matter.

Tekumel can flourish in any system. I agree with Kegash that it will bring in new gamers to what may be the most unique and rich setting in the history of RPGing. That is a very good thing, in the end.

The more Tekumel the better in my opinion. I couldn't care less what system comes with it. Considering how many people are yet to be made aware of what an amazing world it is, any exposure is good exposure.

We recently heard (I think on the tekumel yahoogroup) that the d20 version is still going to be published, but has been further delayed, and probably won't appear until close to the end of the year at the earliest.

I've liked Empire of the Petal Throne since I picked up the original boxed set in 1977. And I've never gotten a chance to play it (d'oh!).

I think that the attraction is the setting, the culture, and the history of Tekumel, and those can work in almost any game system.

But getting new players for a new game system can be difficult. The advantage of D20 is that everyone knows how to use it. Is it the "best" system? That's a subjective question, and it's up to the individual player.

One advantage of D20 would be for crossover campaigns. Want your Ahoggya to slug it out with orcs and goblins? Easy to do. Want to plug it into something like Talislanta? You can.

Heck, the Midkemia novels were basically EPT meets D&D anyway. Why not?

Guardians of Order recently put the release of d20 T:EPT on the iCal on their website. They say it will be out on 13 February, plus or minus 1-2 months. For what it's worth, their release date information has been consistently unreliable and over-optimistic. I'll be surprised if it's out by mid-summer.

Well, even if it's late, at least the project isn't dead in the water. And if it takes extra time to do it right, then by golly I'd rather they take more time. I dislike paying for a product that was rushed without proper editing, proofreading, and playtesting.

Maybe my patience comes from old age. Ye gads, I've become a geezer!
