As mentioned in another section I am writing up a sci-fi game as an intro to Tekumel. The characters play a group of Rangers sent to investigate why a dimensional physicist type has run off with a load of equipment. The central premise is this:
The good professor has been experimenting in the field of dimensional research for a long time. He has investigated the Enigmatic Dorsum (Mihalli) and more recently came across some strange artefacts that have given him clues to a new field - namely pocket dimensions. However these 'artefacts' are actually the influence of 'She who must not be named' as she guides her pawn to a point where she can break off parts of our universe in to easily digestible chunks.
The professor’s performance of late has been lamentable in terms of results and his behaviour very erratic. It has got so bad that his funding has been suspended pending investigation. Not to be outdone he secreted away lots of resources and has done a runner stealing all he needs for the big experiment. The deranged professor then heads off collecting several vital parts in order to complete his objective; a large amount of rare ore from a mining colony, the insides of a new 3-light engine, and some other technical equipment. Once he has all he needs he heads to the Tuleng system (needs a sci-fi name), the idea spot as overuse of 3-light engines in the area has made the skin of reality thin. Under the guise of a scientific breakthrough he starts up his infernal engine while the goddess looks on from afar in anticipation. Then the lights go out.
His ship remains undamaged kept safe within a pocket dimensional bubble for countless eons, his person being placed in suspended animation by the ships systems. Then for some unknown reason the bubble bursts and his ship is drawn to a remote part of the Empire of Tsolyanu in the year 2380AS (need to choose a good year). In fact he has been summoned as a servitor of the Goddess by her crazed adherents – a demon from the past. He is taken and transformed in to something much less than human in order to do Her bidding.
While all this is going on…
The players are sent to investigate the professor and follow him around space trying to thwart him. Eventually they get caught up in his experiment and kept in the bubble with the professors ship. They wake up years after the prof once the ship has been able to self repair enough. Their ship is badly damaged with many systems offline, but they can follow the professors ion trail to the surface and hope they can make repairs. They only know that the planet has been through a great cataclysm and much time has passed.
When they land they meet a wild eyed lone priest of Thumis who had traced obscure prophecies in order to meet “The sky demons who would slay Her heraldâ€

Thanks guys for your insightful comments, just the sort of thing I want to see. To answer your various points...
The wild-eyed priest (not bllind) does not have a translation device. Rather the party will have plenty, and I never liked the golden orbs described so an alternative is for a cybernetic style implant or simliar to attach to the throat. The orbs are too easy to swallow and no good for long term use which the travelling Rangers need in their visits to different worlds. The proviso is that they need time to program the devices to understand Tsolyani, and in the meantime they have an anthropologist who can help.
Handling the power of the party could be tricky, but remember that their ship is badly damaged and I can put as many of their systems or equipment 'offline' as I see fit. Some may not even work at all after millenia in space. So primitve tech is more of a challenge for the group and I think more fun.
I'm hoping the junior crewman will provide an insight in to the 'magic' of Tekumel. I acknowledge that it often takes years of training but his background as a failed trainee Psi-op means he has some mental discipline. I'm unsure as to the deliniation between psi powers and psychic magic, but I'm content to keep it blurry and have fun with it for the game. And yes the savant principle applies too.
Tekumel will now be referred to as Sinistra III in the Nu Opiuchi region. I've been playing some Eve Online recently and its how they reference planets. Again this was found in the Blue Room archives (how we miss its sagely wisdom!) - thanks for highlighting it Epengar.
Good points on culture and Xenophobia. The anthropologist character is crucial here, but we are sampling Tekumel from a high power angle and the priest does desribe them as demons. Although they look human (and Nluss). Epic is the order of the day I think, but after the one off adventure its up to the party how they go forward. I have deliberately set this in a remote area (to be defined) for the reasons you describe.
Doesn't Tekumel still have artificial satellites? Daughters of Riruchel IIRC. Also Riruchel (Sinistra II) was partially inhabitable in the polar regions. These might be areas they could 'retire' although I like the idea of plane hopping if they can convert their 3-light engines to nexus generators. What the heck is an interfogulator anyhow?
Lastly I am still a bit confused as to what level of interaction the ancients had with dimensions. We know that they used energy from between planes (interplanar power), but did they ever travel them and were they aware that pocket dimensions and alternate realities existed? The reason I need to know is that the professors experiment needs to have some theoretical basis. 3-light drive overuse, dimensional experimentation and the influence of the Goddess kinda work, but I want to get the balance right in my mind. Thoughts please!
