One of the characters has recently been given title to a piece of land, complete with peasants, crops, and tax levies to be met.

The servants and peasants, however, are found hiding in fortified dwellings when the characters arrive. They can be commanded to allow the characters in, and will tell of flesh-eating undead who emerge from the fields at night to attack the living with single-minded ferocity.

Investigating the fields, the characters (with perhaps a few stalwart peasants as guides) will eventually discover, at the end of a trail of gnaew body parts, a sinkhole in the "Back Forty Acres" where the brush is too thick to allow easy cultivation of the soil and too hard to allow efficient clearance.

At the bottom of the sinkhole is a an opening in the rocks that connects to a worked stone passageway, perhaps of Bednalljan origin. Anyone who can read Bednalljan will be able to make out eroded carved writings praising an ancient Aspect of Lord Durritlámish. The passageway descents in a spiral to a series of chambers containing tombs and crypts, most of which have been opened at some distant time in the past. Among the ancient shrines and musty rooms of rotted and decayed grave goods (with perhaps a chance to find something valuable or useful, such as an Eye or a steel weapon), lurk the Shedra.

These Shedra are resistant to usual commands from priests of the Dark Trinity and Their Cohorts. This is because they are under the immediate control of a demon of a minor sort.

The number of Shedra should be adjusted to force the characters to retreat. Out in the open they have a better chance of isolating individual Shedra and reducing their numbers while moving back toward the peasant dwellings.

Returning to the tunnels once the number of Shedra has been reduced, the characters may face a screening force of Shedra (or perhaps even a Hra or Vorodla) and the demon's physical manifestation (a walking corpse of particularly terrible appearance). This should be a tough fight, but not necessarily impossible: Even Lord Durritlámish Himself is likely to have taken offense at the blatant misuse of His property. Other malignant creatures may also be present, and not necessarily under the control of or in league with the demon.

Once the tunnels and rooms are cleared, there should be a chance for the characters to find riches of a useful sort if their religions and morality allow.

At this point, the scenario is open-ended: are the chambers cleared and the peasants saved? Or are their more tunnels, perhaps connecting to a previously forgotten Underworld of ancient creatures? This could be a stand-alone adventure or the beginning of something more long term.

Perhaps the demon has control of other undead further away in the Underworld? Perhaps the battle will attract something worse? Or perhaps the prists of Lords Sarku and Durritlámish will arrive to contest control of the tunnels and all that is contained within?

Note: This, obviously, is a dream-come-true scenario for servants of Belkanu and Qon... :)

A variation might have the demon replaced by one or more Ssu, at least one of which is a practiced Necromancer. The leader of the Shedra could also be a renegade priest or a vile foreign barbarian out to stir up trouble. Perhaps the worst case scenario is that this entire event is an incidental part of a large scheme by the servants of She Who Cannot Be Named! Even an ancient wizard such as Nyelmu would (pardon the pun) pale in comparison if the servants of the Goddess of the Pale Bone include sorcerous adepts and/or inhuman servants of the Goddess from the Planes Beyond.

Regards,
