OK, Epengar recommended I try posting this here. Any RPGnetter Tangecites will probably recognize it though. But here goes!
OK. I suck at websearches. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I also suck at finding schools. These two things combined just don't work very well when I'm trying to decide where I want to go for Grad School.
So its time to plumb the depths of knowledge of the people of the Tekumel Boards!
I'm looking for a grad school. The program I want to go into is History. More specifically? Ancient and East Asian.
Ideally? I'd like a school with a strong East Asian and Ancient Studies program. Along with a nice selection of Central and South Asian courses to fill out my schedule (Not to mention the Geography between the two. Since I very strongly believe in a holistic approach to historical research. What's happening in one country likely has something to do with things happening in their neighbors as well). I want to be able to get a class or two about India and the Nations of the Silk Road to go along with my focus on China and Japan. For a language I've had 2 years of Mandarin Chinese, and I don't know Latin. So I'll no doubt end up focusing on China, but ultimately I want to be a well grounded Ancient Historian from Iberia to China.
What I don't want is someplace that is going to make me take US history or Modern Europe. If I can get away without even needing anything from China past the Ming Dynasty, even better!
I know of one school that has anything even approaching this, and that's the University of Minnesota, and I only know about that because I live in North Dakota and that's the only large University anywhere in the region with a decent history program that isn't just Western History.
It will obviously need a good Chinese program, since I'll need to continue my studies of Mandarin.
Japanese as well may not be the worst thing, I should probably expand my linguistical skills.
I also have a solid grounding in Archaeology and Anthropology from my undergrad work.
Finally, one that's application deadline isn't December 1st would be a major plus, since I'd really like to start up Grad School Fall '06 if possible.
So, anyone know of a place that would meet these criteria? Or at least a large portion of them? Because I'm at a dead end. Especially given how few universities I'm even aware of.
and the second post as well.
Definately focused towards being a professor.
A big part of the problem is that I really don't want a standard focus. As I've said, my ideal would be a sweeping Ancient History Program that covered from the Med all the way to Asia and possibly even Mesoamerica. Because I've come to realize I really don't care much about modern history anywhere, but I have a passion for Ancient China equalling that of my passion of Mesopotamia.
Also, I'm definately in the school of historian that believes that "Western Civ" and "Eastern Civ" are terrible generalizations and we should be teaching World History, not just focusing on a single area. Couple that with my foreign language and it pretty much shows why a simple Ancient History Program isn't for me. I wouldn't have any courses about China or India in any standard Ancient History program. Let alone be able to use my language towards requirements.
So, anyone know of any Universities with this sort of Holistic grad program?
