I can't recall, but has there ever been any mention of Hookas or waterpipes in use on Tékumel? To me it seems the sort of thing that would fit...

Generally I would agree with you but I don't know to which degree the Tékumelians have a habit of smoking substances. If there is a tradition of smoking it would of course fit but if the general way taking in stimulating substances is through drinking or chewing it could be hard to explain how they came up with a hookas in the first place.
But then I'm not nearly schooled well enough in Tékumel to say it one way or another on the issue.

Yes - now that you mention it I think the use of powders is referred to but I don't think smoking is at all.

The most comprehensive info about recreational drugs is in the Tekumel Sourcebook, section 1.920 "Eating, Drinking, and Feasting." A bunch of different intoxicants are described there, but none of them are smoked, all are swallowed, or maybe inhaled in powder form. Nearly all are fairly benign in terms of side-effects and are not particularly addictive, perhaps because they are inherited from the technologically-advanced past. Aside from alcohol in many forms, the most common drug is Hnequ-weed, a grass whose leaves are chewed to produce a mild euphoria.
I think you could certainly add hookahs without breaking any thing. Maybe it's a new drug, introduced by foreign merchants. If it became popular, there could be all kind of interesting social conflict around it.

That new drug isn't green powder is it?
Don't forget the tea drinking over in Lords of Tsamra [novel]... and who knows what Dlamelish worshippers do?

It also fits with the Arabian side of the inspiration as well.
