I would like to suggest a "what if": the River of Silence runs from Fasiltum to Jakalla, via Purdinam.

Q: Can the entire passage be traversed?

A: Perhaps not. But perhaps various segments of the river are connected. Possibly, in some sections, by tube car. Assuming that the RoS is not a completely magical thing, the Ancients may well have known about it and possibly also about underground lakes, refecting pools, and massive caverns along its route and set up "Visitor's Stations" and the like.

Of course, this assumes that Purdunam is EAST of the Mssuma river. I can't remember if that is hinted at, or stated anywhere, or whether I just decided that for "My Tekumel".

The River of Silence is of course the river that runs through the Jakallan Underworld. Somebody correct me if I'm mis-remembering that as well.

There is RW precidence for rivers flowing undergound for large distances. I believe there is a small one in the Southern US. Louisiana? Florida? I have a book entitled "Resistance in the Desert" about Morocco in the 1800's. It mentions a river that flows out of the mountains, goes underground for a fair distance, and then re-emerges and ends in the Sahara. I'll look up the name and details later if anyone is interested.

Mind you in the RW none of those rivers can be traversed underground! Not AFAIK, anyway!
